SUMMARY:Tech Webinar: Microgrid Optimization through Co-design
DESCRIPTION:Microgrid design is a complex problem. Choices for plant design (energy resource type\, generation capacities\, equipment locations)\, control strategies\, and the resulting dynamic performance are tightly interconnected. But existing microgrid design methods and tools typically overlook this coupling and fail to explicitly assess dynamic performance during the design phase. As a consequence\, these tools often produce suboptimal configurations that do not satisfy dynamic performance requirements once the design process is complete. To address this challenge\, FREEDM researchers have developed a plant-control co-design framework that simultaneously optimizes microgrid plant design and its control to minimize system costs while ensuring stable operation and enhanced dynamic performance. DESCRIPTION:On November 11th\, the FREEDM community came together and celebrated Thanksgiving in their own unique way. While the traditional American staples of turkey\, stuffing\, potatoes\, and gravy were provided by staff – many of our international students\, faculty\, and their families brought dishes native to their home countries to share. From curry\, to kimbap\, to stewed beef\, everyone was able to enjoy a myriad of delicacies while also enjoying each other’s company. We were able to all end the night with some traditional pies and big scoops of NC State’s own Howling Cow ice cream\, a perfect ending to a wolfpack gathering!

SUMMARY:Technical Webinar: Paralleling Converters for DC Microgrids
DESCRIPTION:One proposed approach to provide energy resiliency after high-impact\, low-frequency events such as weather or security-related outages to the utility grid is to use multiple electric vehicles as energy sources for a DC microgrid. Examples include mobile field hospitals\, emergency shelters\, small campuses\, or even clusters of residential homes. However\, control of multiple DC sources in parallel using conventional methods provides inadequate performance. Researchers at FREEDM developed control techniques that result in accurate current sharing among the converters for a wide range of operating conditions. This talk by Shrivatsal Sharma\, PhD\, focuses on details of the control methodologies along with experimental validation for generic configurations of DC microgrids.
