Recently, NC State’s College of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) held their annual Graduate Student Association Research Day. While there were many impressive presentations, FREEDM’s own Partha Das took home the 2nd place award! His focus is on developing next-generation fault-tolerant drives for transportation applications.
In his own words describing the use of these applications, he states “Global climate change and the depletion of fossil fuels are increasing interest in electric transport systems. One of the main concerns of electric transport systems is their reliability against common failures. In applications like eVTOL and electric aircraft, the failure can lead to catastrophe. We have developed a fault-tolerant drive for electric transportation applications. The drive can continue to operate seamlessly at lower power levels in the case of common electrical failures. The fault-tolerant drives can reduce the downtime of electric drives and can improve the safety and reliability of electric transportation.”
Partha Das is advised by Dr. Subhashish Bhattacharya who states “Partha is a very dedicated and an excellent researcher. His research is driven by his passion for clean and sustainable energy which is the mission of FREEDM Systems Center. He is also a good mentor to other students. I believe he will be a leader in power electronics.”
In Partha’s down time he enjoys watching and playing soccer as well as running. He has run multiple half-marathons in Raleigh! We hope that he enjoys his victory from Research Day and continues to develop his ideas to lead us all towards a greener future. Great job Partha!
