Batteries can provide a whole host of benefits to the electric grid. But before anything is physically connected to the power system, utility engineers need to create accurate numerical models and run hundreds of simulations to benchmark battery operation characteristics under a wide variety of system operating conditions. However, accurately modeling battery performance is tricky because the choice of model parameters and the number of variables involved creates a complex problem. Traditional algorithms developed for battery model parameterization can produce suboptimal results. This presentation introduces a novel approach using field measurements and manufacturer datasheets to automatically determine the optimal parameters and present results from numerical simulations.
